Becoming a Well-Watered Woman in a Parched World – Day 3
Hello again, everyone! We’re on day three of our week-long devotional together in the Becoming a Well-Watered Woman in a Parched World! So excited you’re here!
Just to recap, day one we discussed how we’re really doing right now in the middle of difficult circumstances. When our roots run deep in God’s goodness and steadfast love, nothing can shake us or break us forever. Yesterday we talked about having rotten roots vs. gospel roots.
“What we believe about who God is and who we are in him affects the way we live and think, and these beliefs are buried in the root systems of our souls. If we have good roots, our lives will produce the good fruit of the spirit. These roots can only be established and strengthened when they’re watered by the truth of scripture and cleansed from the lies of this world.”
Today we’re talking about satisfaction in Christ, and the devo starts by talking about drinking from a broken or cracked mug. We fill up that mug with our coffee or tea, but of course, the liquid immediately spills out of the cracks. At a glance, the mug looks like it could satisfy what we need, a hot cup of coffee in the morning, but once it’s put to the test, it never holds up to what we think it can take care of for us. Jeremiah uses this imagery to describe the Israelites’ seeking satisfaction outside of the Lord. Jeremiah 2:11-13:
Has a nation changed its gods,
even though they are no gods?
But my people have changed their glory for
that which does not profit.
Be appalled,
O heavens, at this;
be shocked, be utterly desolate,
declares the Lord,
for my people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken me,
the fountain of living waters,
and hewed out cisterns for themselves,
broken cisterns that can hold no water.
Choosing something that is not the Lord is like choosing a broken and dirty cistern to drink from – nothing satisfactory can come from that! The devo says, “But choosing Christ, the fountain of living waters, leads to salvation of the soul.” It goes on and lists several examples of things we might be trying to find satisfaction.
- Comfort. “We think it will lead to spiritual satisfaction, but it has a way of turning into spiritual complacency and ineffectiveness.”
- Success. “Seeking joy in success is an empty well, an idol that can’t provide that satisfaction we long for.”
- Appearance. “True beauty doesn’t come from pant size or a fashionable outfit. True beauty radiates from a heart captivated by God.”
The list could go on and on, but Christ still shed his blood for you and still flows freely. Set aside your broken cisterns and receive the mercy of God.
